We Need Your Help
The Center, as a local non-profit,has an equal opportunity to gain revenue $$$ through a recycling program of inkjet and laser toner cartridges. Recycling has become one of the most important activities that we can do today to protect our environment.
How It Works:
The collection carton and free shipping bags will soon be available at the Center. Everyone, please consider participating in this program. Either bring in your used cartridges, or pick up some bags for use at your home. You can even ask your employer if they would like to participate. Free shipping bags can be sent directly to your office, and then the proceeds will be sent to the registered non-profit involved, i.e. the Abdill-Ellis Center.
The Center has just registered for this program and you’ll be informed when the shipping bags become available.
May 3rd - June 7th The “Wilde Life” Airing Wednesday & Friday Evenings

The show profiles gay men in the Rogue Valley, and is hosted by Scott Clay, and is produced and directed by Dennis Vickoren. Dennis is attempting to show viewers that we are not that much different from everyone else, to show that young people are struggling with their sexuality, and can watch and see that gay people – can have a good life’ and he recognizes there is a high instance of suicide in gay teens and feels one reason is lack of support from the community. Including a lack of positive role models, and no place to turn when in need. "If I can help one all the effort will be worth it" said Dennis.
On Friday, May 19th Dennis and Clay will be back in the studio for a live broadcast of shows, #5 & #6. These two shows will be recorded and re-broadcast on Wednesday May 31st (show #5) and June 7th (show #6).

May 5th Oregon’s Youth Suicide Prevention Program
SAFE:TEEN Training!
Oregon Public Health is offering a 1-day training to enable you and 1-4 team-mates to provide a comprehensive suicide prevention program for your school:
Date: May 5, 2005, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Location: Oregon Community Credit Union Corporate Office 2880 Chad Drive Eugene, Oregon 97408
Training will be facilitated by Jill Hollingsworth, MA, who has been training school and community staff to implement SAFE:TEEN in Lane County Schools since 2003. She has successfully brought together a strong county team collaboration that has led to additional services for youth. SAFE:TEEN is based on evidence-based practices; it fulfills the Best Practice measures supplied by DHS; it is being evaluated by a national researcher at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to fulfill Evidence-Based Practice measures for suicide prevention programs.
Cost: Free! There is no registration cost, but teams must demonstrate the ability to follow through with the implementation process. You will provide your own transportation, meals, and lodging as necessary. We will provide the training and all curriculum and program materials at no cost to you. Once teams are trained, ongoing costs for program implementation in a school are estimated to be less than $300 per school year.
Space is limited to 30 people who come in teams of 2-5. Teams should include teachers, counselors, administrators, health educators, and/or community advocates. Your team will include those most interested and most able to implement the program. Please apply as a team (minimum 2 members) and provide a letter of support from the principal or appropriate administrator. SAFE:TEEN has been implemented at the school level, school district level, and as a county-wide program.
Expectations of teams: We want to increase the number of school personnel and students who are able to understand suicide and its causes and who are able to implement school-based prevention programs, policies, and procedures. Suicide has been called the "most preventable death," yet, it is the 2nd leading cause of death in Oregon for youth ages 10-17. Following this training you will be able to: take sample policies and procedures to your administration for approval, educate staff about suicide and its prevention, provide classroom lessons for youth, and work with others to provide a safer community for youth. Our expectation is that you will implement SAFE:TEEN in the fall. We will provide follow-up technical assistance to help you be successful.
To register: Please fill out the following form and return it to Donna Noonan, donna.noonan@state.or.us, or by mail to Oregon Public Health, 800 NE Oregon, Ste 772, Portland, OR 97232. Teams will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis until the training is filled, so get your registrations in early to reserve your spot!.

7. Essential Information for Administrators:
· Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among youth aged 10-34.
· Adolescence is the peak onset of mental illness. Early treatment can often not only prevent the exacerbation of symptoms and progression of a disorder, but also saves lives.
· SAFE:TEEN (Suicide Awareness for Everyone) is a comprehensive, school-based suicide prevention program designed to increase awareness of depression and suicidal ideation among school staff, students, parents and administration.
· Staff training consists of a 2 1/2 - 3 hour in-service training, which is typically offered in the fall before the student and parent education components.
· Student training consists of two 90-minute classes or four 50-minute classes. The training is offered in health classes and delivered in context with a related topic such as depression or stress.
· Administration support includes the provision of comprehensive guidelines for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.
· Aside from the staff costs of the inservice training, the program typically costs less than $300.00 the first year and less than $100.00 in subsequent years.
· If you have questions, want more information, or would like to get the registration form as a Word document, please contact me. Please forward to others who might be interested. Thank you!

May 6th & 7thROP Rural Caucus and Strategy Session
A year ago many of us were deciding to take a week out of our lives to walk 65 miles from Salem to Portland in the hopes that it would amplify the debate over peace and justice. It was fun, it was hard - but we felt that we needed to do it and we did it!
Things politically have gotten worse. Katrina, mounting chaos in Iraq, now talk of nuclear invasion of Iraq - but what has built this past year is the willingness of people to take to the streets. In Oregon alone we have seen two crowds of almost 20,000 in the streets for peace and justice this past month! (March 19th in Portland and April 9th in Salem.) And the crowds had minimal overlap (which does beg some pondering) but it shows that we have 40,000 Oregonians willing to interrupt their weekend to agitate. Across the country communities are seeing their biggest protests ever - the dynamic phase of a movement is building. This winter Veterans marched through the Gulf Coast to New Orleans to connect the dots between peace and justice. As I type this, students in Cottage Grove and Hood River (and elsewhere, I suspect) are planning their high school walkouts in support of immigrant rights! And ROP will be coordinating a Veterans for Peace cycle from the California border to Washington State this summer as they cycle 40 miles a day towards their August meeting in Seattle. And we will house, care for and join them. Things are happening. And we need to strategize.
Please review the agenda (below) for the Rural Caucus and Strategy Session - it’s a pretty serious weekend of trying to situate ourselves to best support this moment of expanding activism in the streets. But, we will also have some fun in the Union Hall that tended to us so well last June. A live Samba Band, excellent homemade food! and some dancing to close out the evening - and those who feel up to it are bedding down inside and out just like we did during the walk. (There are motels and more comfortable options as well.)
If you feel ready to move our work forwards a next step, join us. But don't forget to tell us so that we can coordinate all the details to maximize comfort. I look forward to hearing back from those of you who are able to join us. Email marcy@rop.org to get your registration form and make sure that we have a space saved for you!
Warmly, Marcy
