11TH ANNUAL LAMBDA AWARDS

On Friday January 26, 2007 people from all walks of life, middle school age through 85, joined together at the Red Lion Inn in Medford to mark the 11th Anniversary of the Lambda Awards. This annual event, sponsored by the Abdill-Ellis Lambda Community Center and organized by Center Board Members Michael Erceg, Darcy Hamilton, Alicia-Lynne Ryland-Nation and Leslie A. Stone, celebrated and honored another year of individuals and organizations who worked hard to send the message that equal rights for the GLBTQ community are heard and gained.

This year’s theme “Valleywood: Celebrating Our Stars” was developed around the concept of Hollywood Award Shows. L. Scott Clay, host of the groundbreaking television series “Wilde Life” (broadcast on RVTV Channel’s 15 and 93) was the emcee for the evening.

The festivities included a rousing performance by vocalist Tamara Marstan and pianist Bob Milrad.  Continuing a long tradition of performing at the Awards, the Southern Oregon Planned Parenthood Teen Theater, directed by Cil Stengel, entertained and engaged the audience with their innovative performances. Rosemary Dunn Dalton, recipient of SOU’S 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award, was the keynote speaker this year. Active in the struggle for equality and civil rights for more than 30 years, Dunn Dalton is a self-described “change agent” and told the crowd that “working for change is bigger than change itself. Get involved”.

Dennis Vickoren and L Scott Clay were presented with the LAMBDA ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT AWARD for their work in producing the television show “Wilde Life”. It’s the only LGBTQA television talk show in the state.

Larry Crain was given the LAMBDA COMMUNITY OUTREACH AWARD, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions toward understanding tolerance and acceptance of the GLBT community.

Michael Erceg, Secretary of the Center’s Board, was presented with the LAMBDA COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD which recognizes individuals for their unselfish and extensive accomplishments in community service- such as, board, commission or community groups, which have demonstrated a sustained commitment to the GLBT community.

Though unable to attend because of the 2007 Legislative session, Representative Peter Buckley was honored with the LAMBDA HUMANITARIAN AWARD. This award recognizes individuals who through their outstanding involvement and dedication have made a significant contribution of leadership or service that has improved or enriched the lives of others and the welfare of humanity.

The Board of the Abdill-Ellis Lambda Community Center wishes to thank Zach Druckenmiller, Avery Grimsley & James Frank for their service to the community while serving as Board Members. Their support of the Center will always be remembered.

Board Member Appointments

At the Board meeting held on February 13, 2007 the following individuals were unanimously approved as new Board Members, filling the vacancies created by the resignations above.

Serena Cook filled the remaining term of James Frank that ends June 2008.

Thomas DeLong filled the remaining term of Avery Grimsley that ends June 2008.

One vacancy on the Board remains and its remaining term ends June 2007. Anyone interested in this position may find an application on the website that can be downloaded, printed and brought to the next Center Board meeting on February 27, 2007.

Board meetings are held at the Abdill-Ellis Lambda Community Center at 7:00PM. All meetings are open to the community and everyone is encouraged to participate. Generally, Board meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

EARLY RESPONSES TO “WHAT WILL YOU GIVE? SUSTAINABILITY IS IN QUESTION”

It’s been just one week since advising the community of the “state of the Center”, outlining where we are, and where we will likely go if the community remains disinterested. I expect that we will continue to receive more comments and responses in the next few weeks. However I would be remiss to not acknowledge some of the wonderful responses we have received thus far.

The Rainbow Women’s Diva Connection is rockin’ and rollin’ in showing their dedication and commitment to the continuation of the Center! Rhonda Young has spearheaded the group and the Divas have followed her lead, in both volunteer pledges and financial donations. Last Saturday at the Diva Poker night, they got together and donated $130.00. Four Divas have each agreed to cover at least one shift per month at the Center’s desk, and one Diva couple has pledged $10.00 a month.   Be sure to read about it, and how Rhonda is challenging other groups in the valley to do the same.

Two men in the valley have thrown their hat in the ring in support of the Center. They are members of the Pride committee and are determined to raise money for the Center. Both are firm believers that Pride 2007 can, and will be a successful fundraiser for the Center. They are also organizing the Men’s Campout in July and co-organizing the Big Gay Campout in August. They feel strongly that these summer events will raise needed money to operate the Center. Mike Serface and John Morgan are unwavering in their belief that the Center is important to the community and they want to do everything they can to sustain it.

Others have stepped forward with monthly pledges of $5 or $10. And we thank them for being the leaders, for showing their support right out of the gate. We hope the rest of you will follow with similar pledges.

A lot of people doing a little will make a huge difference. One afternoon a month volunteering at the Center matters. $5 a month from each member matters. It will

Keep us open and eventually enable us to expand our services to you. The Center is here for you. Please be here for it.  Again, thank you to all who have responded so far. We look forward to hearing from the rest of you.

WOMEN’S DIVA CONNECTION: NEWS, CHALLENGE AND COMING EVENTS

February 19th News from Rhonda Young

Hello all you beautiful DIVAS!

How is life going for you?  It’s been a beautiful February so far and I hope you all enjoyed Valentine’s Day, and if you were single at least had a good friend to spend it with or a pet of some kind. Ha ha.

I spent it with a good friend who took me to dinner and what a wonderful time I had with her.  Friendship is a wonderful thing in and out of a relationship.  It’s a special love that we share with our friends who are always there and if they are not, then it was not meant to be, right?

To all of you I have met in the last 3 years I do wish for you that every day is a Valentine for you and that life treats you kind.

Now, let’s get on to business.

Well, for all of you that missed the Lambda Awards it was a ball as I have said in my last letter.  I would plan on coming next year if you’re in the area and join us with some great people.

Last Saturday Feb 17th was the CHILLIN WINTER DIVA POKER at Nadine’s and Carla's.  We had, I believe 20 wonderful women there with 3 tables going. We ate and ate and then just enjoyed the friendships.  My congratulations go to the winners this time. The pot was $180 I believe, and Nadine Miller won the big one and Trudy came in second. So way to go girls!

We donated $40 to the Abdill-Ellis Center.  Then Nadine surprised us all and donated all her winnings to the Abdill-Ellis Center so that was a total of $130 to the Center.

At the same time we challenged all other groups and people around the Valley to match this for the Center.  The Center is having a very hard time and may need to close in August if we do not support it.  We also found people in the Divas to volunteer their time once a month or more to help out at the Center.  Way to go girls!  Thank you so much for helping out.  For many of you who do not know, the Center needs your time and money right now or they will close.  That means no more Center Post (the newspaper), no more Black and White Ball, No Lambda Awards, no Big Gay BBQ, and No Gay Pride.  That’s just to name a few of the things they do.  They also have many resources for all gays.  They also need a board member as they have an opening.

So for a lot of lesbians, I know we get together, then we stay home, but what happens when, or if the relationship ends, then where do you go to meet others? Where do you go for support?  For me it was a life saver about 3 years ago.  I have met many friends there and they are loyal and supportive.  What will you all do if it is not there??????  I ask you? Do you have any ideas???? Share them. If you need contacts e-mail me and let me know. Someone is always there to help you out.  So I say to the Diva's: move out of your comfort zone and come join your other Divas and volunteer at least once a month or more. Make this your Center too. Donating at least $10 a month would be so helpful to them.  Serena is a new board member at the Center. She is taking on the Pride committee and needs volunteers. Can you help out?  CONGRATULATIONS SWEET SERENA.

My last words to you all on this are: Please, you are a Diva and with that comes kindness and caring about your sisters and all other people. Can you give????? Will you give????? Will you help the Abdill-Ellis Center?

I do want to thank Nadine for donating all that money to the Center.  I will be volunteering again and have also donated some of my income, I challenge all you DIVAS to do the same.

Back to poker. Thank you from us all goes to Nadine and Carla for opening up their home to the Chillin Winter Diva Poker.

We are at this time looking for a home to have the next one which will be in March.  So if you want this to continue, please e-mail me with a home if you can.  I may have it at my place also but need a back up as it is on the market and may sell.  Again it is RSVP ONLY. So we do not count you until you call me at my number, which will be at the bottom of this page.

As soon as I know where and when it will be I will send out an email.

If not we will just hang out and see what they do have.  Last time we had a ball and hope there are lots of singers out there but if you don't sing come enjoy the friendships we all have and support for one another.

May 18th, 19th and 20th        WOMEN’S WEEKEND IN GURNEVILLE, CALIFORNIA

This is a fun time with thousand of LESBIANS in one city having fun.  I went last year with 4 other people and meet a friend of mine I had not seen in 20 years.  We had a ball we danced and danced (they have like 7-8 gay bars and clubs) also a piano bar of quiet lesbians or for the mood of love.  On Saturday they are at the pool with a wet T- Shirt contest and most of the food is free though out the weekend.  Sunday is a lazy day on the Russian River in the Redwoods.  So if you want to have some fun come join us there are a few of us signed up to go.  Just let me know your going make your reservations, if you need names of places let me know.  The Triple R is usually where some people stay and you can't wait to make your reservation.

So join me with this event it is FUN...

LABOR DAY WEEKEND   Remember the Brookings Blast on Labor Day Weekend?  The Women’s Adventure Club and the Rainbow Women’s Diva Connection plan this event together.  Last year we some of the girls camped at a friend of mine’s property. We had about 15 camping with a bonfire and lots of laughs. We also went kayaking and hiking.  Some of us stayed at the Casa Rubio. So remember to plan on coming if you want to have some fun.

GAY FRIENDLY CHURCH IN MEDFORD         First Christian Church in Medford

One other note that came to me is that some of us are starting to go to the First Christian Church in Medford on Crater Lake Ave. on Sundays.  It is very gay friendly and in fact they will be performing a Holy Union soon.  I have been in meetings with the minister and she is wonderful and open.  The church services are on Sunday at 10:30 am, I believe.  Please come join us. There are about 10 of us so far that are going and they already had some gay people attending.  So if anyone is into church come join us or call me and find out about it.

Well ladies, that does it for me.  Hope you all took what I had to say about the Abdill-Ellis Center into your hearts and can give some of your time.

I will see you in my travels and I will e-mail you all if I hear of any new events. Remember movie night in Grants Pass. I did want to remind you all that if you call me sometimes I am out of the area and can not return your calls right always but will as soon as I am able to.

As always my wish for you all is Grace with love.

EUGENE:     DANCE SECOND SATURDAYS

WOMEN OF SOUTHERN OREGON!!!

HOT FLASH is tentatively planning on coming to Eugene the second Saturday of each month beginning March 10, 2007. For $8 admission, we will be offering a great lesbian party with dance music from the 70s and 80s to today. DJ Lauren from Portland spins from 6 to 10pm. We have chosen a location in downtown Eugene for our private party for lesbians 30+ and all the women who love us.

We are currently forming an email list to send notices of the dances. Before we begin, however, we need to verify that there will be good attendance at HOT FLASH (100+). If the criteria in the above paragraph are agreeable to you, please get back to us so that we can add your name to the Hot Flash Eugene mailing list and get this party started!

Please respond by sending us your email address to brenkat28@msn.com

or www.cruisecontrolpdx.com specifying that you would like to be on the Eugene mailing list... and spread the word! Without an effective email list, we will not be doing the parties... it's up to you!

FEBRUARY 21st      NEW SHOW TONIGHT - WILDE LIFE ON RVTV

WHEN: 10:00PM

WHERE: Charter Channel 15 and AFN Channel 95.

Scott Clay and Dennis Vickoren were the recipients of the 2007 Lambda Award for Arts and Entertainment. Congratulations for your groundbreaking television show: the first gay talk show in the state! One year in the making, Wilde Life features panel discussions and guest interviews about topics important to the LGBTQA community.

Here’s the latest, direct from Scott:

We had studio time on Saturday, February 17, 2007 and recorded three programs. Two with Benson Lanford focus on his interest in Native American culture, the beliefs within some tribes that there are four genders, and the professional appraising of Native artifacts and publishing.

Our third program was with Amiko-Gabriel Stocking and Jammie Roberts. It reviewed the purpose and organization of the youth group “Not Straight Not Sure”, in which both are active. Amiko also provided a perspective on gender labeling and direction to two links on the topic: “Gender Schmender” and “Intersexes Are Human (ISAH)”. Both links can be found at http://group.myspace.com/genderschmender .

We now have 21 programs under our belts, so to speak. Our next studio date is Saturday, March 31, 2007, which will bring us full circle to our one year anniversary. RVTV continues to broadcast programs on Wednesday nights at 10:00, with occasional special showings of the 'best of' broadcast on Friday evenings. New recordings are shown in order on the following Wednesdays, then they cycle through past shows until the next new batch.

Scott says, “We welcome feedback from all parties, especially the Queer Community”.

Wilde Life’s email address is: wildelife@charter.net.

FEBRUARY 24th      WOMEN’S ADVENTURE CLUB: PACIFIC CREST TRAIL HIKE

Notes from Kim DeCosta on this hike

Soda Mountain hike on the Pacific Crest Trail 13 miles SE of Ashland.  Hike through mostly wooded slopes of fir, cedar and Manzanita.  The hike is moderate in level with a little steep terrain and will provide views of Mt. Mc Laughlin, Pilot Rock, Mt. Ashland, Mt. Shasta and the Eddy's.

You should plan for at least a few hours in this wilderness area. Give yourself the ability to extend the time out, continuing as long as wanted on the PCT.  It's amazingly beautiful.

When it gets closer to the date, I will send an update on weather conditions. Depending on the weather, it may possibly become a snowshoe trip.

Leave Ashland:         10:00 am - allow yourself at least 3 hours.

Meeting location:       Bi-Mart near the prescription window.

MARCH 7TH    BASIC RIGHTS OREGON DAY OF ACTION

What follows is an important message from Thomas Wheatley, Organizing Director for Basic Rights Oregon. Even though we’re far from Salem, we are needed!

Friends:

We need your help.  On Wednesday, March 7th, Basic Rights Oregon has its Day of Action and Lobby Day.  If you haven't already registered online, please do so right away at www.basicrights.org!

We're just 16 days away and things are heating up. And we need your help to make it a success.

We need a crew of people to help run the day and make it go smoothly.  This means leading lobby visits, training participants on how to lobby, handling registration and set up, staffing information tables and the action center, and more.

Can we count on you to be part of the staff for the day?  Please email me to let me know. We're particularly trying to find a "Lobby Leader" who lives in each of the 60 legislative districts.

So if you live far from Salem, you are especially important!

Thanks,

(Editorial comment: No host? What’s up with that? You’re all willing to go, so why not be willing to host for a change?  It’s only right to step up once in a blue moon. Have your friends over. It will be a good reason for you to hang up your clothes and dust.)

MARCH 23-25th        CRATER LAKE SNOWSHOE TRIP

Welcome men and women to the first co-ed snowshoeing trip to Crater Lake!

This event is being planned for March 23 – 25 weather permitting.  There is no entrance fee to park this time of year.  It’s an opportunity to see some of the trails around Crater Lake with one of the park rangers – Kevin Franken - as our guide.  He has offered to be our guide and our host by providing lodging at his house in the park.  It can accommodate ten individuals; however, there are only a couple of beds so plan to sleep on the floor.  Space is limited and this is on a first come first served basis.   We can carpool for the drive up Friday night. Share breakfast Saturday morning and share dinner Saturday evening, returning Sunday.

If you are interested in going on this adventure, then please contact Michael Erceg via email michaele828@earthlink.net or via telephone 944-4988.  Additional information i.e., carpooling, cost, meals (planning, what to bring), driving directions, clothing, etc. will be provided to those attending or upon request.

If you can walk you can snowshoe.  There is limited space (room for 10 individuals) so let me know now as spaces will likely go quickly.
