AELCCA Board Members Choose New Officers

The Board of the Abdill-Ellis Lambda Community Center met on June 27th and elected Leslie Stone as Chair and Alicia-Lynne Ryland-Nation as Vice Chair.

Steve Antongiovani and Michael Erceg will continue serving as Treasurer and Secretary, respectively. Rounding out the new Board are Chad Adams, Zach Druckenmiller, James Frank, Darcy Hamilton and Avery “Pup” Grimsley.

Much appreciation for their time and efforts during the last two years goes to departing Board members, Carolyn Brown, Ande Cochran, Danielle Mancuso, and Sally Smith.

July 17th        PFLAG National call in Day to Stop The Federal Marriage Amendment

The vote is only days away! National call-in day is on Monday!

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment next week

Join us Monday, July 17th, as PFLAG’ers from across the nation call their Representative and ask him/her to vote NO on the Federal Marriage Amendment. Organizations that support the amendment that would write discrimination against our gay and lesbian loved ones into the Constitution are "asking Americans to flood the phone lines" of House offices with calls.

Don't let them speak for you.

Monday, July 17th is your chance to counteract their calls and attacks on our families.

Urge your friends and family to join you in this fight!

It is vital that we contact all House members and urge them to vote against the Federal Marriage Amendment!

PFLAG at the NYSE

Here’s a press release from June 29th. Just imagine what it must have been like to be at the New York Stock Exchange on June 30!

PFLAG Makes History at the New York Stock Exchange, Sounds Alarm on Billions-Plus Buying Power of Families & Friends of Gays and Lesbians

“…You get a message that no company can afford to ignore:

Equality is good for business.”

- Jody M. Huckaby, PFLAG Executive Director

Washington – Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) will make history on June 30 as the first organization for families and allies of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) people to ring The Closing Bell(SM) at the New York Stock Exchange.

PFLAG’s trip to Wall Street – to “ring the closing bell on homophobia” – will be an opportunity for the group to discuss the exponentially growing reach of the buying power of GLBT Americans when coupled with the purchasing force of their families and friends.

“The purchasing power of the GLBT community is estimated today to be a massive $641 billion, with projections reaching $1 trillion by 2012. Add in the buying power of the millions of family members and friends who show fierce allegiance to fair-minded corporations, and you get a message that no company can afford to ignore: equality is good for business,” said Jody M. Huckaby, executive director of the more than 200,000-member organization.

“This economic clout and product loyalty is only going to grow.  We are here to give the business world this wake-up call and to help companies compete.”

PFLAG leaders will be visiting the New York Stock Exchange to drive this point home to corporations around the globe. They come with new research to back their arguments that reveals that more than three-fourths of Americans personally know someone who is GLBT and those consumers are more likely than others to support companies that market to the gay and lesbian community.

“Equality in corporate America is more than just a trend. It is a reality that companies both large and small need to support in order to remain competitive. This is about much more than just GLBT people themselves. This is about the families, friends, coworkers, and other supporters who will be loyal to companies who invest in fairness for their GLBT loved ones – and that translates into employee loyalty, consumer base expansion and big economic gains today and in the years to come,” Huckaby added.

The organization pointed to the expanding number of companies – including nearly half of Fortune 500 corporations – that embrace GLBT-friendly practices including domestic partner benefits, nondiscrimination policies, and financial support for organizations working to promote equality.

“There are thousands of parents just like me who will shop and spend with companies who support equality for my lesbian daughter,” said Samuel Thoron, president of PFLAG who will be ringing The Closing Bell. “This is our opportunity to make sure that these corporations know that we’re here, that we’re paying attention, and that we influence their bottom line.”

Corporations supporting PFLAG’s appearance at the New York Stock Exchange on June 30 include American Airlines, Chubb, the Citigroup Foundation, Dow, IBM, Logo, the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, Pfizer, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

July 23rd        Men’s Hike-N-Sweat Club - Mt. Ashland

Hey all you guys out there - Take a look at ALL the ladies events! It's time to liven up the men's quarters with some outdoor physical activity.  Travis Thompson and Scott Clay are starting a men’s 'hike -n- sweat' club. (fun, like when you were a little boy with THE CLUBHOUSE)  We envision a year-round format, going on a series of local/regional hikes in our beautiful mountains of Southern Oregon and Northern California.

Also known as the mythical State of Jefferson. Afterward, we all caravan to Jackson Hot Springs to cool off, or warm up, depending on season.  Hike to start in the afternoon, returning about 8:00 PM for the  'adult hour'  which gives us the opportunity to swim and sweat naked, if you like.

SEVEN GOOD REASONS TO PARTICIPATE:

#1 It’s good for you and your cardiovascular. Activity always assists immunity.

#2 It will tone you up and make you attractive to your boyfriend

#3 It introduces you to fellow- male hikers, you know?

#4 It Strengthens the Community

#5 It allows you to network and get to know each other around here, let’s take a lesson from our sisters here.

#6 There's naked sweating and the opportunity to meet that cool guy

#7 Oh just go - OK?

Our maiden outing...somehow that doesn't sound right...will be "A Day in the Siskiyou, Hiking on Mount Ashland", Sunday, July 23, 2006. If you are interested the meeting place & time and caravanning information is available by calling Travis at 973.7827.  It would be good to remember to have good hiking shoes/boots, sunscreen, lots of water, mosquito repellent, some small first aid /emergency pack, your lunch/dinner, tecnu if you run onto poison oak, a hat and a spirit for fun and hiking. We hope to build up a core of stouthearted men for longer treks, perhaps with camping. The Hot Springs fee is $6.00.

July 25th        Board Meeting

The next Board meeting will be held at the Abdill-Ellis Lambda Community Center on July 25th at 7:00PM.   All meetings are open to the community and everyone is encouraged to participate. Board meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Hope to see you there!

The "Wilde Life" will continue to re-broadcast their first six shows on Wednesday evenings at 10:00 PM.

Dennis and Scott met with Rogue Valley TV to negotiate time for more programs. Filming for four more shows to begin soon.

The show profiles gay men in the Rogue Valley, and is hosted by Scott Clay, and is produced and directed by Dennis Vickoren. Dennis is attempting to show viewers that we are not that much different from everyone else, to show that young people are struggling with their sexuality, and can watch and see that gay people – can have a good life’ and he recognizes there is a high instance of suicide in gay teens and feels one reason is lack of support from the community. Including a lack of positive role models, and no place to turn when in need.  "If I can help one all the effort will be worth it" said Dennis.

The Wilde Life can be seen on Charter cable, channel 31 in Jackson County, on channel 15 in Josephine County, and on Ashland Fiber Network channel 95 and on the Internet at www.roguetv.org; click on community and then click on Live Streaming Video.  You may email the show at wildelife@charter.net.

Women's Golf Update 2006

Well, ladies, it is almost time to get the golf clubs out and try to hit some balls.  We are now meeting the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month at 12:00 Noon at Bear Creek in Medford.  We have not been able to play because of the weather.  So as soon as it gets better we will be out there.  The driving range is great, and covered there and at Stewart Meadows.

I will be sending times and dates out soon for the golf club.  Please let me know if any of you have any questions, ideas on improving our club, or dates and times you like.  Give me a call and let's see what we can come up with this year.

All levels are welcome, and as always, Marla Corbin will be there for lessons.

Until next time.
